Recipes to Support Your Root Chakra

SUPPORTING THE ROOT CHAKRA THROUGH FOOD

The food groups most associated with the root chakra are proteins (lentils, beans) and root vegetables (potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, beets).  Red fruits (apples, cherries, raspberries, etc) are also good because they’re reflecting the color of this chakra!  When in doubt, eat the rainbow!

There’s a bit of a debate over whether or not meat is beneficial for the root chakra.  On the one hand, the root chakra is all about the physical body, and flesh to flesh is about as physical as it gets.  However, meat is generally not recommended in the system of yoga.  It can sit very heavily in the body.  And, from an ethical standpoint, a plant-based diet is more in line with Ahimsa (non-violence).  Ahimsa is one of the Yamas, or ethical rules within the system of yoga; the Yamas (and Niyamas) are two of the “eight limbs of Yoga.”

With that in mind, the recipes I’m recommending are going to be vegetarian or vegan.  I encourage you to make whatever alterations or substitutions that feel right to you.  My loved ones know that I take recipes as suggestions only; creativity in cooking is one of my favorite things!

My easiest go-to meal happens to be a pretty grounding one!  I’ll put a can of beans (usually chickpeas) and a can of V8 into a saucepan.  Heat on medium/low and add whatever spices you like (for me: turmeric, cumin, cayenne, black pepper, and salt).  Serve over rice/quinoa, or have as a simple soup.

SWEET POTATO, CHICKPEA, AND RED LENTIL SOUP

This recipe gives instructions to use an InstantPot, if that’s one of your kitchen gadgets.  I love letting soup simmer on the stove, so I used the “old fashioned” way (the recipe gives both ways).

CREAMY CURRIED ROOT VEGETABLE SOUP

I haven’t quite come around to curry, so I took some artistic liberties and changed up the spices.  I used oat milk as the creamy aspect; I’ve really fallen in love with oat milk, and one of the reasons why is how nicely it thickens in sauces and soups.

BEET, APPLE, AND WALNUT BREAKFAST MUFFINS

This one I tweaked a little to make vegan.  Believe it or not, you can use mashed potato as an egg replacement (1/4c per egg) and aquafaba (the water canned chickpeas come in) as egg whites!  So I used those instead of the egg and egg white, but you can certainly keep it simple and just use eggs.  The pink color of the batter is really fun.  They were a hit with my husband too!

CARROT AND BEET MUFFINS

This was a fun take on a carrot cake.  The beets add a bit of earthiness, but I was pleasantly surprised that neither of these muffin recipes tasted super “beet”y.
