Preventing Falls while Enhancing Stability and Well-being with Chair Yoga and Qi Gong

As we age, maintaining balance and preventing falls becomes increasingly important. Falls can have serious consequences for older adults, leading to injuries, reduced independence, and a decline in overall well-being. Fortunately, there are effective practices that can help enhance stability and reduce the risk of falls. In this article, we explore the benefits of incorporating Chair Yoga and Qi Gong into your daily routine to promote strength, flexibility, and balance.

Why is Fall Prevention Important?

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations among older adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in four adults aged 65 and older falls each year, resulting in over 3 million emergency department visits.

Moreover, falls can lead to severe consequences, such as fractures, head injuries, and reduced mobility. These injuries not only impact physical health but can also have psychological effects, including a fear of falling again, decreased self-confidence, and social isolation.

This is why regular exercise is so important! Safe movement (like you get from chair yoga and qi gong) maintains and improves muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination to support stability and prevent falls.

Chair Yoga Benefits

Chair yoga brings the benefits of yoga to all bodies by teaching you how to work WITH your body using the chair as a tool. Some postures are done seated in the chair, while other forms are standing and using the chair for balance (if accessible). For example, tree pose is well known for practicing balance. See the photo of Caitlyn below; you can hold on to a chair with one or both hands to keep yourself steady, and even keep the toes of the “raised leg” on the ground like a kick stand.

The gentle and mindful nature of yoga lends itself beautifully to SAFELY building strength, balance, and flexibility. While practicing, you are encouraged to check in with your body and notice how each posture feels, which helps you “off the mat” as well because that body awareness reduces fall risk.

Yoga also incorporates breathwork to promote relaxation, focus, and body awareness. By reducing stress and increasing focus, you can calm the mental chaos that increases fall risk. Slowing down your mind and body and truly “being” helps you move more safely throughout the world.

The Power of Qi Gong

Many folks are more familiar with Tai Chi than Qi Gong. Qi Gong is a system that includes practices like Tai Chi. Both movement practices use the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine to support the cultivation of vital energy, or Qi.

Qi Gong forms can be done seated or standing. The standing forms use softened knees, which engages the leg muscles. It is helpful to have a chair nearby so you can work with some of the standing postures, and then take a rest when your body requests it.

With a focus on alignment and bringing the body into balance, you can’t help but find more balance in your day to day movement. The Qi Gong forms invite you to breath into the abdomen (a grounding method of breath) and find the hips over the feet, shoulders over the hips, and head over the shoulders. This may sound like common sense, but we find ourselves in all sorts of slumped postures.

Which one is better?

Is Chair Yoga or Qi Gong better for fall prevention? The exercise you do is the most effective. That means that if you LIKE chair yoga more than Qi Gong, and you’re going to practice more, than that’s the better modality.

Of course, doing both will give you even more tools and practice. You may find that group classes help with accountability, and are fun! It’s also helpful to have an in-person instructor who can answer questions that arise.
